AFRECS 4th Annual Conference at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago
This year's keynote speakers include
Archbishop-elect Daniel Deng Bul of the Episcopal Church of
Sudan and Bishop Paul Marshall of the Pennsylvania-based
Diocese of Bethlehem, which has a companionship with the
Diocese of Kajo Keji in Sudan.
While gathered for plenary sessions, panels, and special
interest sessions, participants will address the conference
theme "Growing Relationships…Building Partnerships." They
will also learn of humanitarian efforts underway in Sudan
sponsored by the Sudanese in the U.S., learn from NGOs,
diocese and churches the 'nuts and bolts' of building
partnerships, and have ample opportunity for networking, and

The fifth
Sudan Field Course will take place from Sunday 8 June to
Friday 13 June 2008 in Rumbek, South Sudan. The course is a
one-week, graduate-level residential program offering a
fast-track introduction to all regions of the country. It is
designed for aid workers, peacekeepers, businessmen and
women, researchers and diplomats - those living and working
in Sudan and those about to start.
Taught by recognized Sudanese and international specialists,
the course sets the challenges facing the country in the
dynamic context of Sudanese history and culture. This year's
teaching staff will include Douglas Johnson, author of The
Root Causes of Sudan's Civil Wars, Gerard Prunier, author of
Darfur: The Ambiguous Genocide, Suliman Baldo of the
International Center for Transitional Justice in New York,
Mark Bradbury of Bristol University, Jok Madut Jok, author
of Race, Religion and Violence in Sudan, Joanna Oyediran and
Philip Winter. The course director is Justin Willis. The
residential nature of the Course gives extensive opportunity
for informal exchange between students and teaching staff.
The Rift Valley Institute is a non-profit research and educational organization working with communities and institutions in Eastern Africa (including Sudan and the Horn). The Institute's programs connect local knowledge to global information systems. Fellows of the Institute are regional academic specialists and practitioners in the fields of development, conservation, media and human rights.
